Neighbor Stories
Hear stories from friends of Lowcountry Food Bank.
Food insecurity can be difficult to spot from a distance. When someone does not have consistent access to enough food, they often make tough choices to stretch the food they have. Tens of thousands make these choices every day. These individuals can be people you know well – family members, coworkers, educators, retirees – our neighbors.
Our neighbors have been generous in sharing their experiences with us. Through our feeding programs and network of 240+ partner agencies, hear how our neighbors find the nourishment, support, and strength their families need to thrive.
“What gives me hope is that there are people trying to share love, and trying to give other people a chance to find security through things like the Food Bank.”
– Annette, Veteran

Meet Tasha
As a vegetarian, Tasha appreciates that the Food Bank offers fresh, nutritious produce that she can select at Fresh For Alls.
“I take advantage of the free produce because it helps my family save in case we need extra money because of the cost of living. What makes me hopeful is that no matter how chaotic the world is right now, every first Tuesday of the month, this location will be here, and I’ll be able to see the wonderful volunteers.”

Meet Mack
Mack served our country for four years and is currently a full-time college student. His Veterans benefits and part-time work do not cover his expenses for school, rent, utilities, his 15-year-old car — much less food. He was so thankful when he heard about one of Lowcountry Food Bank’s partner agencies that can give him access to healthy food and ease his food insecurity. With a huge smile on his face, he said, “I was able to eat whole wheat pasta with canned chicken on top.” Not only was it good but his stomach was not growling during class. “Thank you for helping those like me, who just need a hand up.”

Meet Meita
“This food pantry has helped me in more ways than I can express. I have enough food in my house to share with my neighbors every once in a while. At the pantry you are treated as if you were the most important person in the world. For someone who has not experienced hunger, I would let them know that there are wonderful people that can help you. You are important, and never be ashamed to ask for help. The pantry’s director and volunteers are a delight.”

Meet Edward
“Food prices are so high. My family can’t make it on the money we earn. I would not be as healthy as I am without the support I get from the Food Bank.”

Meet Letha
“There have been plenty of times I went hungry so that my kids could eat. I’d rather they eat than me. My local food pantry is important to me and my family because without food stamps – and the way food prices are going up – we couldn’t survive.”

Meet Melvin
“The food pantries are so important to me and my family because it helps out when you are on a fixed income. I feel a weight off my shoulders when I come to the pantry. This helps me not feel so stressed – knowing I can get food and still be able to pay bills on budget.”
