Walk to Fight Hunger

Join us for a day of fun as community members unite and walk to fight hunger in the Lowcountry. There is a walk route for everyone – choose the 5k nature trail or the paved 1 mile family-friendly loop. With activities like packing Backpack Buddies, seed planting, scavenger hunt with prizes, and so much more, you can expect a great time for all ages!

Back again this year is our drive-thru, drop off food drive right next door at Charleston Southern University. Most needed items are canned proteins, like tuna or chicken, canned vegetables and fruit (low-sodium, low-sugar). Participants going to the Walk in Wannamaker Park can drop off at the event.

Registration is now closed. You can still join us and register at Wannamaker Park the day of the event. See you Sunday!

Where will the Walk to Fight Hunger take place?

The Walk to Fight Hunger will take place at Wannamaker Park at the Tupelo Shelter located at 8888 University Blvd, North Charleston. We will have signs leading you to the right location!

Is there a fee to enter the park?

There is a nominal fee of $2 per a person or free with a Gold Pass to enter the event. If you have a large group and would like to purchase in advance please call the Park & Program Services at (843) 795-4386 and they can be mailed to you or picked up day of the event.

Will food and water be provided?

Each participant will receive one bottle of water, lemonade and an option of light snacks. Semilla and Life Raft Treats Food Trucks will be at the event if you’d like to purchase lunch. To help with sustainability efforts please bring your own water bottle.

What if it rains?

We will be paying close attention to the weather pattern next week and the forecasts leading up to 9/18, and will adjust as needed. It is our hope that the worst case scenario will be a delayed start and the WTFH will go on, rain or shine, unless the conditions are unsafe. We will be emailing all registrants and sponsors as well as updating our social media the morning of the event.

Where will the Food Drive Drop-Off take place?

The Walk to Fight Hunger Food Drive will be at Charleston Southern University’s football field. Turn onto BUC Club Blvd and we will be right at the corner. Our truck will be visible from the road and we will have signs to guide you! All participants will receive an LCFB decal.

Most needed items are:

  • canned protien (chicken and tuna)
  • whole grain rice and pasta
  • canned vegetables (low-sodium preferred)
  • diapers and formula

What is the event timeline?

  • Register check-in: 10:30 am – 11:15 am
  • Opening Remarks and Walk Start: 11:15 am
  • 11:50 am: 1-mile family friendly loop anticipated return
  • 12:20 pm: 5k nature walkers anticipated return
  • 12:45 pm: Award ceremony
  • 1 – 3 pm: Activities, food trucks and fun!

What are the walking routes and how long are they?

The Walk to Fight Hunger will have a paved, 1-mile family friendly loop and a 5k path that is partially paved or wooded trails. See the map below for details.

Can I still walk if I want to arrive late? What if I only want to attend for the activities?

Yes, you can walk either route at your own pace. The event is from 11 am – 3pm so you can enjoy all the walk routes and activities in that time if you do not wish to walk with the big groups.
