Over the past months, we’ve shared information on the different social determinants of health – such as housing, employment, access to healthcare, and transportation – and how they intersect with food insecurity. We know we will only be able to end hunger if we address its root causes, which means acknowledging and understanding these intersections and identifying the role Lowcountry Food Bank can play in ensuring our neighbors have access to all the resources they need to thrive.

As an important first step, we’ve launched a Community Resource Map to help our network of pantry and community partners locate additional sources of assistance. Utilizing GIS technology, the Community Resource Map draws on data from United Way’s 211 hotline to create a visual representation of the location of multiple organizations that provide services ranging from employment and workforce development to housing, emergency financial assistance, healthcare, and legal aid. Anyone can use the map to filter and search for specific services in their community. While not exhaustive, we hope it will enable easier referrals and, when used in tandem with resources like the 211 hotline, will facilitate even greater collaboration between service-providers and reduce knowledge barriers that may stand in the way of getting people connected to the help they need.

You can find the Community Resource Map under the Find Food link on our website. The overview section explains how to use it, and an additional resources section offers more helpful links. The map will be updated periodically to reflect current information. We encourage you to share this tool with anyone who may need it!
