Lowcountry Food Bank currently operates three food locker sites in its Northern Region; all located in Horry County—the largest county in South Carolina and one of LCFB’s two priority service counties.
All installed at LCFB partner agency sites, the first set of lockers was installed in May 2024 at The Shepherd’s Table in downtown Conway. A second site became operational in July 2025 at North Strand Helping Hand in the Longs community, followed by a third installation at Shepherd of the Sea Food Pantry in Surfside Beach, which began operating in August 2025. Together, these three sites—each equipped with approximately 12 freezer lockers and 15 refrigerated lockers—serve a broad geographic area across Horry County and neighboring communities.
The lockers provide neighbors with convenient access to nutritious, nonperishable food and fresh items such as produce, dairy products, and meat. Residents from as far south as Georgetown County, west to Aynor, and north to Shallotte, North Carolina, regularly utilize these services.
Collectively, the three locker sites have distributed nearly 70,000 pounds of food to more than 1,600 families.
These innovative distribution points are rapidly becoming an integral part of charitable food systems across the country. Beyond increasing access to nutritious food, they help address several common barriers to food assistance. Food lockers provide convenient, after-hours access for neighbors who work during traditional pantry operating hours, as well as for those who lack reliable transportation and must depend on friends or family members for rides or desire privacy in seeking food assistance.
In addition, food lockers help reduce food waste through their integration with Feeding America’s Order Ahead platform. This online ordering system allows neighbors to browse available food options and select only the items they want and need, resulting in a more personalized experience and more efficient food distribution.
