In 2022, the Lowcountry Food Bank launched The Learning Center—an innovative, self-paced learning management system designed to empower partner agency staff and volunteers. Through interactive training courses, we help partners build skills to better serve our neighbors with dignity, safety, and compassion.
As of 2024, five fully developed courses are available, covering topics like food safety, creating welcoming environments, and building nourishing pantries. These trainings make it easier for agencies across our 10-county service area to meet required certifications and onboard new team members efficiently and consistently.
Before the Learning Center, in-person trainings were held only a few times a year—often limiting participation due to scheduling conflicts. Now, pantry leaders can engage their teams anytime, anywhere, increasing access and participation across the board.
Rather than offering simple video recordings, our courses are intentionally interactive and engaging, designed to support various learning styles. Each course includes videos, quizzes, games, and practical scenarios to bring the content to life.
To ensure relevance and impact, every course is reviewed by both staff and partners. One agency leader, after piloting our Creating Welcoming Environments course, immediately visited a hardware store to purchase paint—transforming her pantry into a calmer, more inviting space.
638 Course Completions and Counting
So far, we’ve seen 638 course completions across all five trainings. And we’re not stopping there. Upcoming courses will cover disaster response, volunteer orientation, nutrition education, and using environmental cues to promote healthy choices.
